NYCHA tenant says he’s planning ‘no rent’ strike with others due to poor conditions
A NYCHA tenant says he is planning a ‘no rent’ strike with others at the Breukelen Houses due to poor conditions.
Residents say that an incinerator at Building 7 is broken, and they have been forced to throw their trash outside.  They say trash cans are overflowing, and some are even leaving their trash on the street.  Community members say the trash is also attracting rats.
A sign placed inside Building 7 says the incinerator has been broken since June.
The residents also say there is paint chipping and to steel rusting on the staircases.
"We do not want rats crawling up to our tenants apartments. These tenants, there's a lot of tenants here that just had newborn babies here, and we want to ensure the safety of those babies and the safety of those senior citizens and also those who cannot speak for themselves,” said Calvin Drumgo, a resident of the apartment building.
Sources from NYCHA tell News 12 that since the report, the compactors were opened again Monday. They said an exterminator came by and that the staff cleaned all the areas.
