Caught on camera: Large dog fatally attacks family dog; no charges
A Brooklyn family says a large dog without a leash killed their dog in an incident that was captured on camera.
In the video captured by a neighbor’s surveillance camera, Marion Vasco can be seen walking their family dog, a 15-year-old Yorkie named Tootsie, back on July 15.
He says he heard a woman's voice calling for his attention. When he turned around, he saw a large unleashed American Staffordshire leaping toward him.
Vasco picked up Tootsie, but the video shows the large dog pull the Yorkie out of his arms and proceed to attack.
Vasco says once it was over, the dog was limp but still alive. They rushed to the vet, but Tootsie couldn't be saved.
He says they called the police but it took them a long time to arrive. The NYPD said in a statement that "this is a civil matter that must be taken up with the owner of the other animal."
The owner of the American Staffordshire had no comment on this story.
Vasco says the family is disappointed that the owner of the dog isn't being held accountable for what happened. They hired a lawyer and are planning to sue.
News 12 reached out to the Health Department, which said it is investigating the incident.
