Storm causes more than 120 reports of downed trees across NYC

PROSPECT HEIGHTS -

Wednesday night's storm was intense and dangerous in some parts of the borough, causing 100 trees to come down across the city.

A spokesperson for the Parks Department tells News 12 they received more than 120 reports of trees down across the city with more than half of those reports in Brooklyn.

The NYPD's 77th Precinct tweeted out a picture of the tree Wednesday night, asking people to avoid Saint John's Place between Underhill and Washington avenues.

"About 35 years ago we planted these trees. Saint John's Block Association and a group called the Green Gorillas. That was about 35 years ago. I was a little guy back then. It was like one of our kids, you know, we were kind of emotional with the tree, but thank God nobody was hurt," says Mike Jones, president of the Saint John's Block Association.

In Prospect Heights, a tree came crashing down right on top of a van on Carroll Street between New York and Brooklyn avenues. Neighbors tell News 12 they are not surprised it came down because they often saw it sway in the past on extremely windy days. No one was inside the van at the time.

The Parks Department began inspecting non-emergency issues at 6 a.m. They are asking for anyone who needs to report a non-emergency tree condition to call 311.
