Federal authorities arrested and charged a top aide to Assemblyman Felix Ortiz.
Maruf Alam, 29, is accused of stealing thousands from Ortiz's campaign fund.
Alam was arraigned Thursday afternoon in Brooklyn federal court.
According to sources, Alam often acted as a proxy at events and is being accused of defrauding Ortiz's campaign of about $80,000.
Alam declined to comment on the allegations after he was released on $100,000 bond Thursday afternoon.
According to the criminal complaint, he withdrew the money over a seven-year period and deposited it into his own bank account, falsely reporting campaign finances in the process.
Ortiz released a statement saying he was just being made aware of the charges and had no further comment.
However, the criminal complaint states that federal investigators interviewed Ortiz about the case back in March.
Alam faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on federal wire fraud charges.
