Police: Officer dies in 9th NYPD suicide of 2019

Posted: Updated:

Police say an off-duty NYPD officer and member of the Strategic Response Unit is shot himself to death Wednesday night in his Queens home.

Police presence was seen outside the officer's home Wednesday. Police say the officer was taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where he could not be saved.

This is the seventh time since June that an NYPD officer has died by suicide, and the second this week.

Early Tuesday morning, officer Johnny Rios was found dead inside his Yonkers home of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officer Rios was stationed by Yankee Stadium.

"He was happy about 3 weeks ago. He told my husband that he was going to be getting married and you know we had told him congratulations. We're going to really miss him a whole lot," said neighbor Beverly Manuel.

The NYPD wants any officers that may be struggling to know that help is available through the Law Enforcement Officers in Crisis text line.

If you need help text "BLUE" TO 741-741.
