Flies are surrounding a shuttered trash compactor at the Sheepshead Bay Houses.
Tenants say they have not been able to throw any garbage down the locked trash compactor for the entire summer. As a result, they say, they are dealing with the flies and the smell.
According to tenants, the garbage compactor was locked by New York City Housing Authority workers and garbage has been piling up.
After News 12 left the Sheepshead houses, workers put up signs at the Nostrand Avenue building saying that the compactor machine is out of order for repair. The signs ask that tenants put garbage in black bags in front of the building.
A NYCHA spokesperson says exterminators were at the Sheepshead Houses on Thursday and that the agency will keep an eye on the situation in the days to come.
