Family of man gunned down in Brownsville trying to come to grips with death

The family of a man who was gunned down while visiting his loved ones in Brownsville say they are trying to come to grips with his death.

Rakeem Edwards had just finished his shift as a FedEx driver Friday when his family says he was gunned down on East New York Avenue.

It was days before his mother's birthday, and she told News 12 off camera that she feels like she's in a nightmare she can't get out of.

His sisters say the 31-year-old was the oldest of six children. He grew up in the Astoria Houses in Queens, where he still lived, and only went to Brownsville once a week to visit his mom who lived in the Marcus Garvey Houses.

When he stopped Friday a little after 10 p.m., his mother wasn't home. He called his sister moments before the shooting to let her know he was in the area. Police tell News 12 that the Queens dad was shot in the head and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  His family says they are deeply troubled that violence came right to their doorstep.

The NYPD says there are no arrests right now as the investigation continues, but his family says he didn't have enemies and they don't know who would have wanted to hurt him.
