Hundreds hit the pavement for annual TEAL walk and run

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds laced up their sneakers Saturday in Prospect Park for the annual TEAL Walk and 5K Run for Ovarian Cancer.

This is the 11th year of the TEAL walk and run. TEAL stands for "tell every amazing lady."

Survivors and their supporters spread awareness about ovarian cancer, as well as raising money for research.

Organizers say over 20,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed every year in the U.S. Of those cases, 65% are said to be fatal.

They say it is difficult to diagnose too. Symptoms are subtle and there is no screening test available yet.

The people at the walk say it's important for everyone to be aware of this disease.

The walk's cofounder said the support at the event is important for those who have been diagnosed, as well as for the loved ones who lost someone to ovarian cancer.

There was a record number of walkers and runners out Saturday -- more than 800 people took on the 5K to spread awareness and celebrate survivors.
