Mayor Bill de Blasio and Speaker Carl Heastie announced on Tuesday that the city will no longer issue violations to homeowners for sidewalk damage caused by city trees.
The announcement also stated that the city will ramp up sidewalk repairs under the Trees and Sidewalks program to address over 5,000 priority sites over the next three years.
The Department of Transportation and the Parks Department will still inspect for dangerous sidewalk conditions.
However, the city, not the homeowner, will be responsible for fixing them if they are exclusively tree related. It will also review existing notices of violations and determine which were caused exclusively by city trees.
