New York City public schools celebrated dads today with the annual Dads Take Your Child to School Day.
Dads were greeted with applause outside P.S. 153 - The Helen Kellen School in Co-Op City Tuesday.

“It’s actually great to see because not every father is in every kid’s life so the fact that all these fathers showed up today. It’s wonderful,” says Richard Campbell, one of the fathers participating.

This year was the 11th year the Bronx fathers have taken action visiting P.S. 153 and the first year they joined forces with nearby M.S. 180, because school officials say this community of dads outgrew the elementary school.

"Build that family so when Madison and her classmates graduate from here, we all know each other so we’re still there for each other throughout,” said Omari Gay, chair of the Fathers of Hellen Keller at P.S. 153.

The group created a network of fathers excited to help other dads in their time of need.

"Dads will call and say, ‘Hey I don’t know what to do with my child with this homework, can you help me?’” says Gay.

News 12 is told there are 100 parents who showed up for their kids Tuesday, and that this is a tradition that will keep on going.

“They come together, and they provide services and support to other members in this group or other children who don’t have positive role models in their lives,” says Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
