The family of an NYPD detective who died from a Sept. 11-related illness was honored by the city Tuesday.
Detective Luis Alvarez' family were given the keys to the city by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Alvarez died earlier this year from Sept. 11-related illnesses. He was one of the people helping at ground zero.
Alvarez' brother, a retired police officer in Long Island, spoke at Tuesday's ceremony and said Luis Alvarez would have wanted to share this honor.
Earlier this year, lawmakers passed the extension of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund through 2090.
