Brownsville basketball court renamed to honor slain teen
A Brownsville basketball court was renamed to honor the memory of a teen who was fatally shot while playing ball there one year ago.
The court at Chester Playground will now be known at Timi Oyebola Courts in remembrance of the 16-year-old, who loved basketball.
Oyebola's father, David Oyebola, founded the organization Timi Project to combat gun violence in the community. Through sports, music and basketball tournaments like one held on Saturday, he says they're hoping to prevent other parents from having to go through what he's going through.
The playground is set to undergo a $2.5 million renovation.
Organizers are hoping to turn the courts from a place of tragedy into one for laughter, friendship, and hope.
David Oyebola says he knows his son would be proud.
