East New York resident asks city fix basement mold problem

Posted: Updated:

A resident in East New York is calling on the city to fix issues causing concerns in their home.

Linda Ford says her home is a sanctuary where she has lived for 50 years. Ford cares for her bedridden mother, but over the last month she says it has become a nightmare.

Ford's basement is polluted with mold, drain flies, and a repugnant stench. Ford says it is only exacerbating her mother's asthma.

Ford says the mysterious sludge infiltrated her pipes and backed up into her home in late August. Ford blames the construction outside her home and wants the city to fix the issues and help her clean up.

"I didn't know if it was defecate, or tar. It was very very thick and it covered everything and it stuck to everything," said Ford.

The Department of Design and Construction acknowledged a project to upgrade the storm sewer on the street where the home is located. They found that the sewer in Ford's home was improperly connected.

News 12 is told it could have caused the sewage back-up but it is unclear if it actually did at this time.

A spokesperson for DDC told News 12 that the Department of Environmental Protection would follow up with Ford to properly connect the sewer.

News 12 reached out to the DEP for more details. It referred back to the DDC.
