New affordable housing will be coming to Cypress Hills in 2021, according to officials and developers.
The housing, located at 50 Pennsylvania Ave. will have more than 200 apartments, including some set aside for the formerly homeless and the elderly.
Edna Watson, 63, says she wasn't sure what the construction project would bring to her neighborhood.
"It is very much needed, we need low cost housing living can hardly pay for rent now," she says.
Elected officials and developers Pennrose and RiseBoro Community Partnership are working with the city and the state to bring the affordable housing project to life.
"With that rezoning, there was a lot of anxiety that it was going to bring luxury housing that is not targeted towards the community," says City Councilman Rafael Espinal. "What we have here is the total opposite. Here, we have a nonprofit working with a developer on private land building 100% affordable housing."
The project is expected to be completed by summer of 2021.
