Diocese of Brooklyn holds procession in support of Mother Cabrini

Italian Americans took part in a procession with the Italian apostolate of the Diocese of Brooklyn in Carroll Gardens Sunday.
More than 1,000 Catholics marched into the historic Sacred Hearts & Saint Stephen Roman Catholic Church as part of the annual procession and Mass.
Organizers say this year's turnout was higher than ever because many of the worshippers want the city to reexamine its decision not to include Mother Cabrini as part of the She Built NYC initiative.
The city opened an online competition to nominate female New York trailblazers to be honored with statues. Mother Cabrini got the most votes, but her statue wasn't chosen for inclusion.
Mother Cabrini was the first American citizen to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. She's known for her work in orphanages, with immigrants and for her involvement in the creation of schools and a hospital in New York.
The Catholic Foundation of Brooklyn and Queens is working to collect money to build its own statue of Mother Cabrini.
