Sunset Park worker claims placards being used for illegal parking

Posted: Updated:
A Manhattan man and Brooklyn worker claim emergency responders are illegally parking their personal vehicles around the borough.

Ryan Frank works in Sunset Park and has noticed many cars with placards, police handbooks and even badges in an attempt he says to avoid getting parking tickets.

But Frank says he see the cars blocking crosswalks, hydrants and sidewalks. After losing a friend in a fatal accident, he has become motivated to promote public safety.

Frank notes that all of the cars are personal vehicles that officers and firefighters use to drive to and from work.

On Sept. 3, Borough President Eric Adams held a town hall to discuss the issue. Frank says since then, nothing has been done about it.

Frank says the ability to park anywhere is not a right afforded by members of either departments, and that they should lead by example.

An FDNY spokesperson says the department does not issue placards and that members should abide by parking laws and regulations. The NYPD says the commanding officers of the 72nd Precinct are aware of the issues and have met with community officials about it.

The NYPD told News 12, "The NYPD is a committed partner of the Vision Zero initiative and its mission to keep all New Yorkers safe."

Frank believes municipal employees should be encouraged to take public transportation and there should be a forum on the issue.
