America's largest Jewish charity Met Council is partnering with the Hebrew Educational Society to support hundreds of families by opening its 40th food pantry in Canarsie.
The neighborhood has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in New York City. The hope for the new pantry is to help close that food gap.
Met Council is expecting families to come in about twice a month. The families will select from more than 4,000 pounds of fresh, nutritious, and kosher foods that are available each week.
More than 500 families have signed up to participate in the food pantry. Met Council is expecting the number of families signed up to double by the end of the year.
