NYPD, community discuss concerns about recent hate crime incidents
Posted: Updated:A meeting between community members and the NYPD was held Thursday night to discuss concerns about recent hate and bias incidents.
The meeting was held at the Jewish Children's Museum in Crown Heights. Activists and residents met with NYPD Chief Of Detectives Dermot Shea, who is scheduled to become the commissioner of the department next month.
One major community concern that was discussed was the number of troubling attacks targeting the Jewish community. Over the last two years, there have been numerous reports of swastikas found around the city.
People have been attacked in the streets, and many of the offenders are teenagers. Chief Shea says his work in his current role made him well-equipped to take on these crimes. The co-founder of the museum, Devorah Halberstam, says meetings like these are crucial.
Halberstam says working together with the NYPD to put an end to these crimes is also important.
Activists say it's crucial to address this issue because many in the community have become afraid. They also hope the incoming commissioner will be successful in his new role.
