Approximately 12,000 passengers pass through the York Street Station every day, and now the Dumbo Improvement District is leading an effort to alleviate the congestion by proposing a second entrance.
Right now, there is one way in and one way out for York Street commuters. The area has seen significant growth over the past few years.
The station alone serves Dumbo, Vinegar Hill, NYCHA's Farragut Houses, Brooklyn Bridge Park and the new Wegman's grocery store.
"We have seen double the ridership in the last five years," said Dumbo Improvement District President Alexandria Sica.
The Dumbo Improvement District started a petition, which has already gained more than half its goal in signatures. Some commuters think having an entrance deeper into Dumbo would be beneficial.
The Dumbo Improvement District plans to send the petition to the MTA and other government agencies. They hope for a change soon.
