A new report released by Uber has left many wondering exactly how safe it is to use the ride sharing app.
It's estimated more than 45 Uber rides happen every second, according to a spokesperson for Uber, and it says those numbers alone reflect the world we live in, both the good and the bad.
The report is the first time Uber has released a safety report like this. So, how safe is the ride sharing app? The report, which shows numbers between 2017 and 2018, reveals more than 3,000 sexual assaults were reported in 2018, of those, 229 were rape cases.
The numbers come from reports from riders and drivers, which Uber says means the actual number could be higher given that sexual assaults sometimes go unreported. Uber says it takes safety very seriously, saying between 2017 and 2018 more than 1 million potential drivers did not make it through the Uber's screening process, which it says is an example of how rigorous that check is.
The report also documents there were 19 fatal physical assaults, between 2017 and 2018, and lists 107 total fatalities across 97 fatal crashes with 90% of those crashes taking place in urban areas.
Karen Baker, the chief executive officer of National Sexual Violence Resource Center was quoted in the report saying, “the publication of this report is a bold step that builds off of that effort and sets a new bar for corporate responsibility and transparency.”
She goes on to say that sexual assault is not just one company's problem or issue and that more companies need to be transparent and accountable.
