Bergen Beach man saves life on Brooklyn Bridge

Posted: Updated:

A Bergen Beach man is credited with saving the life of a man on the Brooklyn Bridge earlier this week.

Joseph Hansen and his friend were driving over the Brooklyn Bridge around 12 p.m. on Dec. 2 when they spotted a man standing up on the beams. Hansen was able to talk to the man and get him to come down to safety.

Hansen believes fate brought the two together because the wintry weather on that day forced him to come home early from work.

Hansen said he used motivational and uplifting phrases to try and coax the 24-year-old man off the Brooklyn Bridge.

The NYPD was also trying to help the man on the bridge, but Hansen feels his words convinced the man not to jump.

The man was taken to Beth Israel Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

If anyone is in distress, they can call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. They can also text "Home" to 741-741 to reach a Crisis Text Line counselor.
