Canarsie residents are calling on the New York City Department of Transportation to make changes on a road that they say is dangerous, following a two-car accident early Friday morning.

Police say the accident happened at the intersection where Farragut Road, Ralph Avenue and 77th Street meet. Residents say the crossing is dangerous due to speeding drivers.

The driver of a 2015 Fiat was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition. The driver of a 2008 Lincoln was arrested and is facing three charges, including driving without a license.

City data shows that the section of Ralph Avenue between Glenwood Road and Foster Avenue had 15 accidents so far this year. Although none of them were fatal, residents say the DOT should take preventative measures such as installing a speed camera or another traffic light to avoid accidents that could be fatal in the future.

In a statement, the DOT said in part:

"Injury statistics from NYSDOT show that during the five years from 2013-2017, there has been one serious injury involving a pedestrian and one serious injury involving a motor vehicle occupant. During that same time period, there were 30 injuries classified as minor among motor vehicle occupants."

A representative added that there are two speed cameras actively issuing violations in the area.
