The Stonewall House in Fort Greene is offering affordable housing for seniors – the first and largest of its kind in the state.
Louis Lizardi, 67, has been living with a friend and bouncing around from shelter to shelter since losing his home in Puerto Rico during Hurricane Maria in 2017.
"It is not easy to be gay and older because people abuse you when you least expect it. There is always someone bullying and making you try to feel like you're worthless," said Lizardi.
That's why Lizardi tells News 12 he couldn't be more excited to live at Stonewall House on Saint Edwards Street. The complex has more than 150 units of low income and affordable housing available for individuals 62 and older who earn 60% or less of the area median income.
The NYCHA next-gen building developed by BFC partners and Sage will also have a community center with an array of free services from hot meals and health and wellness workshops, to exercise and language classes.
Lizardi says he's incredibly grateful for this complex and that he knows it will be life-changing for him, and so many others.
The building's new tenants are expected to move in the next couple of weeks. The Sage Center will open at the beginning of next year.
