Women apparently kicked out of Bed-Stuy shelter stirs public outcry

Dozens of women who found refuge in a Bedford-Stuyvesant women's shelter say they are getting kicked out without proper notice.
The 103 women who live at BRC Shelter say they had less than 30 days to move to a different location while a group of men came in
The community, along with City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, are calling on the De Blasio administration to put a pause on what they say was a reckless and inconsiderate move.
The Department of Homeless Services said in part, "We stand by our legal and moral obligation to provide shelter every night to those who need it. At this location, we are transitioning to providing shelter, services, and support to single adult men ahead of the seasonal increase in the need for shelter for single adult men as winter arrives."
There has been a public outcry and a growing petition for the Department of Homeless Services to explain its actions following that statement.
News 12 is told the tenants were notified about the move on Dec. 4 and that busloads of women have already been taken to new shelter locations.
Many women did not want to speak on camera because they were worried they would be penalized and placed somewhere far from their jobs and families.
Community leaders have started a Change.org petition for the women living at BRC. So far, it has 1,200 signatures.
