East New York NYCHA tenant injured in ceiling collapse

Posted: Updated:
An East New York NYCHA tenant was injured after the ceiling in his apartment came crashing down.

Emmett Mizell says he's lived at Fiorentino Plaza his whole life. He says he feels insulted by NYCHA for its slow response to what he calls a growing issue.

Mizell says it started with a few holes in the ceiling, and he filed a work order on the issue Dec. 7.

"They kept telling me the same thing, 'sorry that nobody came out. But you know, you should be expecting someone,' yada yada yada, long story short, nothing ever happened," said Mizell.

"I was laying on the bed, I heard a cracking noise, and bam, the ceiling came down," said Mizell.

Mizell was taken to the hospital to be checked out. He was able to get temporary housing through the American Red Cross for two nights at a hotel in Queens.

He removed all of his belongings from the bedroom so that nothing would get damaged. "I had to salvage what I could," said Mizell.

NYCHA says it sent workers on Thursday to assess the issue, which the agency says could be related to the boiler room. Meanwhile, Mizell says he's heard other tenants on his floor have similar problems.

"Their ceilings are falling down, they have leaks, they have small children in the household, and I don't want to see anything happen to them," said Mizell.

The Housing Authority tells News 12 Mizell will be getting keys to a temporary apartment nearby. NYCHA told Mizell that it will make repairs once he moves all of his personal items.
