Drivers will soon start getting penalties for driving in the bus lane, according to the MTA.
The MTA says its bus-mounted cameras will help them issue fines for bus lane violations along the B44 Select Bus Service route.
The 60-day warning period ended Monday. That means drivers who are caught blocking or parking in bus lanes will begin to receive violations with fines of up to $250. The cameras on the B44 SBS were implemented on Oct. 30 and the MTA rolled out an awareness campaign to encourage New Yorkers not to stand in, drive in or block bus lanes.
The agency says it will help improve bus speeds and efficiency, writing "since bus-mounted camera enforcement on the B44 began, data shows an overall improvement in bus speeds of 4% and up to 17% on segments of Nostrand and Rogers avenues."
So far, the program began along the B44 SBS route, but the MTA says within the next year it will expand the camera program to other bus routes that use city bus lanes.
