Neighbors in Borough Park fed up with trash, illegal dumping

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors in Borough Park say one street in their community has become filthy.

Anita Parmer says the stretch on 37th Street in Borough Park is known for being dirty--saying many use it as an illegal dumping site.

"You just drive down here, open your door, and throw your trash out, and no one sees you. No one catches you, and no one holds you accountable," said Parmer.

Parmer's family has lived in the area for 60 years. She says things have been this way for a while.

As people dump trash, neighbors call the city's Department of Sanitation -- sometimes several times before crews come to clean up. However, they say people come back to dump some more.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Sanitation after arriving at the street, and within a couple of hours, sanitation crews were on the scene using leaf blowers and street cleaners to clear the garbage.

Parmer says she wants to see more done to prevent the issue from getting this bad in the first place. "If there's a camera put up, someone would be held accountable, either by getting them fines or someway to not have this happen every month," said Parmer.

The Department of Sanitation tells News 12 in a statement that it's aware of the issues at this location and that it cleans the area weekly. It says anyone caught dumping illegally can face fines.

Parmer says she hopes the area is maintained so it is safe for the people who walk through.
