A tattoo artist from Dyker Heights is taking his talent to a reality TV competition.
Brooklyn tattoo artist Drew Hicks is bringing his passion to the nationally televised competition “Ink Master.”

This season, contestants are put in teams for a turf war, with the west, mid-west, south and eastern regions of the country represented.
Hicks says he is bringing his unique Brooklyn style to the East team.
“It’s always something that from the beginning of my tattoo career I was striving for,” says Hicks.

Hicks owns the Dyker Heights studio Hidden Gem Studios and began a passion for tattoos at a young age.

“My buddy showed me how to do it when I was like 12. I did my first tattoo, and I was 12,” says Hicks, who created his first tattoo on himself in honor of his grandmother who had just passed away.
Hicks says he is continuously drawn to the ink because he says his technique and skills are always evolving.

“I want the end result to look phenomenal because when you walk around the neighborhood with a tattoo everybody’s going to stop you and ask where you got it, and who did that amazing work; so I’m in it to make the client happy and kind of tell their story,” says Hicks.

He says by going on the show he wants to prove he’s got what it takes.

“I’m not here just to make a couple of bucks, I’m here to etch a name for myself in Brooklyn, in New York City,” says Hicks.

Ink Master: Turf War airs Tuesday nights on Paramount Network.
