NYPD community center in East New York opens doors to new facility

Posted: Updated:

A new NYPD community center on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York opened its doors to hundreds of residents during its open house Saturday, showing the community some of the programs available in the new facility.

The NYPD first unveiled the first-of-its-kind community center back in October, where they turned a former Brooklyn courthouse into a place where kids can grow.

The police department says the facility is going to provide educational, recreational and social programming for young people between the ages of 12 and 19.

Families will also be able to make use of the new classrooms for tutoring, computer lab, counseling space, as well as dance, music and fitness studios.

The community center also showed off the self-defense, barber, videography and drone flying classes.

Throughout Saturday's events, kids got to meet and know the officers that keep their neighborhood safe.

The NYPD community center is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
