One Brooklyn lawmaker says many Coney Island residents are struggling when it comes to getting their basic banking done. Now, he's looking into what can be done to give those residents more options.

Last week, Municipal Credit Union's Coney Island branch closed its doors on Surf Avenue. This left residents on the western side of the neighborhood with just one bank.

"We are walking like a mile, a mile and a half, just to get our own money," said a resident.

Councilmember Mark Treyger says a nearby Chase bank closed its doors after being damaged by Superstorm Sandy. He says the ATM trailer they had was soon abandoned, leaving some residents with no options.

He says he is reaching out to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the New York State Department of Financial Services to take a look at the area, which he says is also seeing more vacant storefronts.
