Students from Stephen Decatur Middle School 35 hosted their second annual Unity Walk in honor of Black History Month on Wednesday.

The entire school community, including teachers, students and their families, marched through the streets of Bed-Stuy. They went from Fulton Street to Restoration Plaza with the message, "We are equal, we stand together."

Teachers say it's important for the children to get out and stand up for a cause.

"It's important because I think when you look at the history of activism it starts with the youth," says Jeannette Franklin. "And in order for them to actually make change they have to start when they're young."

School leaders say MS 35 firmly believes in increasing awareness of social issues that impact the community.
