NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea is recognizing a special crossing guard in the 70th Precinct.

Mary Nelson, better known as Mrs. Liz, has been a crossing guard for over 20 years and has been safely getting kids across her corner for over a decade.

"It's my livelihood, this is where I work, this is where I stay and take care of these kids and do the best I can," says Nelson.

But Nelson does more than safely get kids across the street- she chats with them, tells them good morning and to have a good weekend - she builds relationships with them.

She says she thinks she was born to take care of kids and she works to ensure their safety no matter the weather.

"I'm protecting them like I was their parent and guardian or whatever and it just, it makes me happy," she says.

She calls it an honor and a privilege to help get kids safely to school. She also teaches them how to properly look at the lights and signs for when they are crossing a street without her.

"I think I was born to take care of kids, I've been babysitting since I was 12 years old and I'm still babysitting," says Nelson.

She hopes to keep being a crossing guard for the next four to five years and hopes her story inspires others to become crossing guards.
