A man was found dead inside of a van at a gas station in Canarsie Monday night.
Investigators say that the van was on fire when authorities first responded to the scene at the BP gas station at 401 East 80 St. around 6 p.m.
Police were called to the gas station on reports of the white van on fire. When they were able to put out the flames, officers say they found a man inside and unresponsive.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police haven’t confirmed the cause of the fire.
A gas station worker told News 12 he knows who the man is and that he is a regular customer. The man was known to have parked his van at the gas station and many believe he lived in his van. News 12 is told he is believed to be between 50 to 60 years old.
The NYPD tells News 12 that there was no visible trauma to the man, but the medical examiner is working to figure out what caused his death.
The gas station reopened for business this morning.
