New fines went into effect Thursday that could mean big charges for parking violators across New York City.

New Yorkers know they need to move their cars to the other side of the street on days when street cleaning is in effect, or risk a fine if they do not.

According to the Department of Sanitation, the fine just went up across the city.

 

Fines were $65 in Manhattan below 96th Street, and $45 elsewhere. Now the penalty for leaving a car on the wrong side of the road is $64 city wide.

As for why, the New York City Department of Sanitation says it’s doing it to keep the city healthy, safe and clean. On Twitter, the department says "do your part and move your car for the broom."

Fines will go up even more if the ticket is left unpaid, though citizens can dispute parking violations within 30 days of the ticket being granted.
