Parents in Brownsville have created a petition for safer conditions at an intersection near a school that they say is dangerous.

Parents say cars continuously pass through the crosswalk throughout the day while pedestrians wait to cross.

"They speed through, they will not stop until they're actually upon the crosswalk and when they do that, at any point in time it could be a little too late," parent Tionna Morales told News 12 Brooklyn on Tuesday.

The intersection consists of two crosswalks with three points of entry. One is from the New York City Housing Authority parking lot, one is traffic from Sackman Street and one is traffic from Glenmore Avenue.

"Vehicles that are exiting as people are walking through the crosswalk, so you have cars coming out and cars coming in side by side with pedestrians. That's unacceptable," said Morales, who added that she and her husband’s concerns prompted them to start petition for a safer crosswalk.

"If there was a light here or another agent, potentially we would be able to save lives or prevent a situation like that from happening," Morales said.

Morales requested that the Department of Transportation conduct a safety survey, which she said it plans to do this month.

"I see all the children as my own, so I take the responsibility of being here for them to show support in any way that I can," Morales said.

On Tuesday, as she said she has done many days, she stepped in for the crossing guard who was out sick.

"We're more than the results of a survey, we are people," Morales said. She says she worries that the survey will not be enough.

News 12 Brooklyn reached out to the DOT, who said it has received her request for improvements and it will review them.

News 12 Brooklyn also reached out to NYCHA about the parking lot entrance that meets the crosswalk but has not heard back yet.
