"The keepers are here.”- Bronx Zoo animals cared for during pandemic

The largest metropolitan zoo in the country shut its gates last Monday due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the animals are still being cared for.
This includes splitting their essential staff into two groups, in case someone was infected and required quarantine.
"The keepers are here, the people who deliver the food are here, the vet staff is here. Everything that we need to do to provide the care that we consistently provide to the animals, we did not want any disruption in that care,” said Breheny.
Breheny says there are about 120 workers at the zoo each day with protective gear practicing social distancing, all while taking care of thousands of animals.

"They feel the sense of responsibility, they know what kind of responsibility they have because these animals that are here they rely on us completely for everything,” said Breheny.
Even though the zoo is closed, there is a way to enjoy it at home. There are online programs and activities available on its website.
