Immigration advocates call on government to release ICE detainees

Immigration advocates staged a caravan protest Monday afternoon to call on the government to release Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees from county jails and the Elizabeth detention facility.
The demonstrators drove around the Trenton War Memorial where Gov. Phil Murphy held Monday’s coronavirus briefing. The protest was done in vehicles so that it followed social distancing orders.
The advocates want the detainees out of the jails because of the pandemic. Demonstrators included family members of the detainees, along with faith leaders and political activists.
Murphy said that ICE is a federal agency and not under his control.
