NYPD commissioner commends 73rd Precinct for 31 gun arrests amid pandemic

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea is honoring the men and woman of the NYPD on the front lines of the battle against coronavirus.
According to Commissioner Shea, 27 members of the NYPD have passed away due to the coronavirus and at the peak of the virus he says 20% of members were out sick.
As of Thursday, Shea says less than 17% were out sick. Despite those numbers, Shea says the NYPD is still out on the street fighting crime.
Since the start of the year, the NYPD says the 73rd Precinct’s anti-crime team has made 31 gun arrests, 21 of those since the end of March, right in the midst of the city being put on pause.

Shea took a moment to commend the officers for their hard work over the last couple of weeks trying to combat gun violence in the middle of the coronavirus

This past Tuesday, on the 13th floor of 330 Dumont Ave., 21-year-old Shamar Davis was shot and killed. Investigators tell News 12 it appears there was some sort of fight between a group of people from two different apartments up on the 13th floor. Police say 25-year-old Tejion Lee from the Bronx was arrested and charged with murder.

Officers say they will continue to look out for guns on the streets despite the challenges they face with the coronavirus, but are asking people to just stay home.
“Since the lockdown we've been trying to continue business as usual. It’s a little tough right now, everybody wants to go home to their families, but we still have a job to do. We're out here taking the guns off the streets, everybody needs to stay home though. There's nothing essential about being out with a firearm, nothing essential, stay home. Make our jobs easier, let us go home to our families,” says Police Officer Keith Stark, of the 73rd Precinct.

Police tell News 12 all of the guns have been sent to the lab for testing where it will ultimately be determined if they were used in any shootings.
