City opens 2 more miles of car-free streets as part of Open Streets initiative

Two more miles of roadways across the city will turn car free as part of the city’s Open Streets initiative.
This is the second go at the Open Streets concept in an attempt to give New Yorkers a chance to enjoy the sunshine and milder weather, while also social distancing.
In Downtown Brooklyn, Willoughby Street from Pearl Street to Lawrence Street and Lawrence Street from Fulton to Willoughby will shut down from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every single day.
In the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, Willis Avenue from 147th Street to 148th Street and 148th Street from Willis Avenue to Bergen Avenue will be closed weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The mayor and house speaker Corey Johnson say they hope by opening more streets in the city to pedestrians it will give New Yorkers more space to be outdoors while wearing a mask and still maintaining social distancing rules and staying six feet apart.
Over the weekend seven miles of car-free streets opened ahead of schedule, with two more miles being added today.
“And in this case, these are specific sites that are being managed by local Business Improvement Districts, local organizations that do so much for their communities and are taking responsibility for making sure everything is set up monitored and safe,” says Mayor Bill de Blasio
The mayor says 40 miles of streets across the city will open throughout the month and they hope to expand to a total of 100 miles in the coming weeks and months.
