Rally held in Coney Island to show gratitude for school workers

As community members continue to show gratitude for first responders and health care workers across the city, a rally was held in Coney Island Thursday to show gratitude to the workers taking care of city schools
Community members came out to show their support for the building service workers, maintenance workers, cleaners, school food workers and school safety agents.
Councilmember Mark Treyger stopped by Abraham Lincoln High School on Ocean Parkway and P.S. 254 on Avenue Y to thank the men and women for their hard work. He says even though schools have been shut down because of COVID-19, 6,400 32BJ SEIU custodial staff members have been on the front lines, not only sanitizing schools, but providing meals at distribution sites and regional enrichment centers.

The workers say they are grateful for the recognition.
"People should know that we are the caretakers of the neighborhood and the kids and the kids in the classroom and so forth, we do whatever we can," says Michael Imbasciani, handyperson at Abraham Lincoln High School.
The councilmember promised them that he will fight for them.
"I’ve organized a letter to the mayor with a super majority of my colleagues 34 members of the council saying hands off of our school budget. We in politics oye them more than thank you, it's not enough to say thank you on TV, it's not enough to say tweet thank you on Twitter or say a Facebook thank you post. Our thank you's have to be aligned with our budget priority,” says Treyger.
He says the men and women who work for our schools are needed now more than ever to help get not only through this pandemic but recover from it.
