A staple restaurant in Bay Ridge has always fed first responders, and now it's joining forces with the community to donate meals to those on the front line of the pandemic.
Born and raised in Bay Ridge, Leo Lykourezos is known as simply Leo to his customers at Leo's Casa Calamari. He says he has many friends and customers who are essential workers.
He says he’s always fed them, but that during the pandemic it’s been more important than ever.
"You feel good, you know it's something you did, you just fed 30 people, 50 people in one shot,” said Lykourezos.
He’s delivering platters of pasta, pizzas, greek salads, seafood and more to police officers, firefighters and health care workers.
He says he’s doing deliveries at night and on weekends to make sure all shifts get a piece of the pie.
"You see it in their faces, you see them, they come out, they're exhausted, just one less thing for them to think about is where they're going to get a meal or what they're going to get,” said Lykourezos.
While he’s been donating the past few months on a small scale, a friend launched a GoFundMe page to raise money so Lykourezos could donate more food to more essential workers.
"Whatever we can all do to chip in, it's hard for one person or one business to do it alone,” said Lykourezos.
In just over a week, they’ve raised $7,000 of their $20,000 goal. Lykourezos says he’s been overwhelmed by the community’s response and said it feels good to help out.
"It's not about me, it's about the people that donated that made it possible,” said Lykourezos.
Lykourezos says the next deliveries include the 62nd and 72nd precincts. He says none of this would be possible without the community’s support.
