New data released by the city’s Health Department is breaking down coronavirus cases by zip code.

Areas that encompass the zip code 11239 are showing the highest number of deaths.

A map from the city’s Health Department shows the breakdown citywide, and according to local leaders, confirms that black and Latino New Yorkers were twice as likely to be killed by the virus as white New Yorkers.

In Brooklyn, the zip code 11239, which covers East New York and Starrett City, has the highest death rate with 612 deaths per 100,000 people. It is also the fourth highest in cases with 3,890 positive cases per 100,000 people.

In the northeast Bronx, the zip code 10469 has the second highest case rate as of Monday night, with 3,956 per 100,000 people. This zip code also has the second highest death rate with 429 deaths per 100,000 people.

Assembly member Charles Barron and New York City Council Member Inez Barron released a statement together saying in part, “The city and state need to double their efforts in getting resources to our communities immediately. Black and brown neighborhoods in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island have among the highest number of deaths. We knew this from the beginning of the pandemic crisis.”

They also say it’s unacceptable and a shame that the state transformed the Javits Center into a hospital and converted parts of Central Park into a field hospital, saying that both were in predominantly white neighborhoods and underutilized.
