Memorial Day weekend is usually a busy few days. AAA says last year 43 million Americans traveled, but this year things are much different.

AAA says it is not putting out a Memorial Day forecast because the economic data has been undermined by COVID-19.

AAA says it expects numbers to be at an all-time low. Even staying local could be difficult with restrictions in place at parks and beaches.

Beaches will be open, but swimming will not be allowed. The NYPD says the Parks Department will be patrolling the sand to make sure people are complying. They say people are allowed to go into water up to one’s ankles, but the city says lifeguards will not be on duty, so nobody can go into the water past that. Those on the sand will be asked to avoid crowding and maintain proper distance.

For those heading to the park it is important to note barbecuing and gathering at the park are prohibited and grilling areas are closed, as are city playgrounds. 

A beaches plan for Brooklyn is expected to be released later today.
