13 miles of open streets added in expansion of citywide initiative

The Open Streets program continues to expand as 13 additional miles are being added this weekend.
The initiative has shut down roads to traffic to give residents more space to be outdoors to social distance.
Police barricades are already in place to close off an entire block along West Ninth Street outside of the Red Hook initiative.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the area is one of 60 locations across the city that are part of the program.
The initiative began in April and had 30 miles of roads and bike lanes before this weekend's additions. The open streets will be managed by local partners, precincts and parks.
"A lot of our city agencies are almost back up to full personnel," de Blasio says. "Now we have that sweet spot where we can do the open streets, keep them safe, make sure there's enforcement when needed."
De Blasio says the city now has more miles of open streets than any other city in the country. He says the city is also working with Google Maps to including the closure so drivers are given alternative routes.
