United States Postal Service employees are calling on their congressional representatives and demanding funding due to coronavirus financial struggles.
The agency reported a “modest” increase in the number of packages it handles when the pandemic hit, alongside a significant drop in the amount of mail being sent.
“We are out here again asking for a stimulus from our government because the Postal Service is the only federal entity that did not receive one,” an employee tells News 12
“They say by September and October, it might be closed down,” an employee tells News 12.
A USPS spokesperson tells News 12 in part, “The recent trends indicate that our 2020 financial performance will be better than our early scenarios predicted."
However, there is still uncertainty as the Postal Service waits for a $10 billion loan approval in the COVID-19 relief package Congress passed in March.
President Donald Trump has threatened to withhold it if the agency doesn’t start charging more for shipping.
Members of the American Postal Workers Union called for the passage of new legislation that would give the agency another $25 billion.
