? Relatives of an 11-year-old Brooklyn girl who outwitted an attacker hope her story will serve as an inspiration for others who find themselves in harm's way.
Xochil Garcia, 11, said a man grabbed her in the stairwell of her Ocean Avenue apartment building on Mother's Day. Garcia said she had noticed the man following her home. She had just come from buying a card and nail polish as a gift for her mom.
Garcia said she's thought of how to fend off an attacker in the past. "My plan was to make him think it'd be easy for him and not hard," Garcia said. "When we got to the lobby, he loosened up on my wrists a little bit and I took advantage of that and cut loose and ran outside."
Bernard Mutterperl, 19, is charged with unlawful imprisonment, endangering the welfare of a child and burglary. He was arraigned Monday and bail was set at $25,000 cash or $75,000 bond.
Neighbors who came to Garcia's rescue said Mutterperl told them he was innocent.
