Students walked out of Grady High School today to protest the Department of Education's (DOE) plan to shutter the school.
Students say that while the school may have been struggling a couple years ago, the school is getting better.
The DOE plans to close the school and reopen it with a new name and mostly new staff. The agency says the changes could bring up to $2 million in new funding.
The students say that the proposal will strip away the unique opportunities the current school provides.
Schools Chancelor Dennis Walcott says that he understands the passionate feelings, but that the DOE must provide high-quality education to all students.
School officials say all current students will be guaranteed seats in the new school if the plan is approved.
