According to a new study published in the Journal on Lancet Oncology, one in six new cancer cases are caused by either preventable or treatable infections.

According to the study, the four leading causes of cancers caused by infection are from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Hepatitis B and C as well as the stomach bacterium Helicobacter Pylori.

The researchers say about 2 million people developed cancer in 2008 through infectious disease, of which 80 percent of those diagnosed with cancer were in developing countries.The study says that increasing access to vaccines and low-cost treatment strategies in developing counties could reduce cancer rates.
