Although the mercury is slowly inching down, signaling the looming end of the summer, mosquitoes in Brooklyn apparently did not get that memo.
?The mosquitoes just seem much worse than they ever were last year,? says Denise Goldberg, who lives on Third Street in Brooklyn.
The New York City Deparmtent of Health says the Asian Tiger variety of the blood-sucking insect has been showing up in record numbers this year.
The DOH had taken measures to combat the buzzing invaders, spraying certain sections of the borough with larvaecide. But for Goldberg it is not enough.
?I bought Citranella torches, I bought this flying bug thing, and nothing works,? she says.
Although mosquitoes may be irritating, health officials say their bite comes with no health risks. They tested 1,800 mosquitoes, and thus far none tested positive for the West Nile virus.
The DOH asks people to call 311 if they spot stagnant water, which can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
