Employees at SUNY Downstate Medical Center are urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to halt job cuts after they received pink slips for next year. Hundreds of workers who had been handed non-renewal notices rallied today with local politicians and union leaders to help fight the firings. Officials say Downstate annually serves about 400,000 patients, many of whom require specialized treatment only offered on the campus. Lawmakers say the cuts were made to compensate for Downstate's major operating deficit, but that millions of dollars have been set aside to possibly save the jobs in jeopardy.
